Jubilee
60 photos of the Jubilee celebrations from Horse Guards through st james' park up towards buckingham palace. one picture for each of her majesty's years on the throne. It was very much like a festival, but a festival of "nation" and "tradition" that is very alien to most of my own experience of life in this country. like a large number of british people I grew up surrounded by republican dreamers and anti-establishmentarians. taking part in an event like this, and actually having some great conversations with people about the nature of our monarchy that such an institution continues to exist for many reasons, and one of them is the separation of "state" and "government" in the tangible form of a living person. I don't like giving a multi-millionaire landholder any of my taxes, but I can't really see how this country would work without it.
